The WILLIAMS surname was a difficult one to resarch because it is such a common name. With the help of
some distant cousins and old census records, I have traced the line back to Gabriel. Many interesting facts immerged from
the other associatied families (HIGGINS and STOUT) which I have also included in this section.
GENERATION 1
GABRIEL WILLIAMS was born 1756, and died November 20, 1827 in Monongalia Co., VA (WV). He married MARGARET
LYTTON June 22, 1784.
Gabriel Williams served in "The Flying Camp" in 1776. In 1780 he enlisted in Seventh Maryland Regiment
under Captain Mason as a Sgt. He received payment from the Maryland line in 1782 and a pension in Monongalia Co. VA in 1819.

GENERATION 2
JOHN WILLIAMS was born December 06, 1792, and died Bef. 1850 in Monongalia Co., VA (WV). He married ELIZABETH
(??). She was born 1796 in VA.
Notes for JOHN WILLIAMS:
John Williams (age 40-50) is suspected to be the father of William Williams based on the fact that he had
a son born between 1820 and 1825 living in his household as recorded in the 1840 Monongalia Co census. From William's military
records, he was born in Monongalia Co in 1822. There are a few other Williams that are also possible, but John was living
near David Higgins, whose daughter, Leah, married William.
John died between 1842 and 1850 as he is not shown in the 1850 census. His widow, Elizabeth, is shown with
all her children shown in the 1840 census except William, who had moved to Ritchie Co with his father-in-law, David Higgins.
Also, John and Elizabeth had one other child, Michael, who was born after the 1840 census (around 1841).

The STOUT family connects twice to the HIGGINS line. I am including both lines until they converge. The
STOUT line is interesting, in particular the story of PENELOPE (VAN PRINCIN) KENT and the connection to ZEBULON PIKE (of Pike?s
Peak fame). Zebulon Pike is a great-great grandson of JOHN STOUT.
GENERATION 1
JOHN STOUT married ELIZABETH (GEE) BEE.
Child of JOHN STOUT and ELIZABETH BEE is:

RICHARD STOUT was born 1615 in Nottinghamshire, England, and died 1705 in Trenton, NJ. He married PENELOPE
(VAN PRINCIN) KENT 1644 in New Amsterdam. She was born 1622 in Amsterdam, Holland, and died 1732 in NJ.
Richard was discharged from the British Navy around 1640 and settled in New Amsterdam. He, along with 38
others, settled Graves End, Long Island, in 1644.
In 1664, an Indian came to warn Richard's wife, Penelope, of a planned attack on Graves End. When the Indians
attacked, the forewarned settlers were able to defend themselves. Richard Stout walked into the open and demanded a parley.
After the conference, the whites and Indians agreed to a truce and a two day ceremonial to celebrate the treaty. The white
settlers agreed to purchase the land and the Indians never attacked again. The date of purchase from the Indians was recorded
January 25, 1664.

my last will and testament, I make my son John and my son Jonathan my executors to.
For this may will performed, in witness hereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal, June the ninth day,
in the year one thousand seven hundred and three.
Richard X Stout
Proved before Lord Cornbury, Governor, Captain General & Etc., 23 October 1705 at Perth Amboy. Recorded
in Liber I, p120, of Wills at Trenton, New Jersey.
Penelope's father was said to have been a Puritan Baptist Separatist who was banished by the Church and
forced to flee Holland. Penelope married a Van Princin in Amsterdam sometime prior to 1640.
In 1640, Penelope and her husband took ship with a group of immigrants to America. The ship was wrecked
off the coast at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Many of the passengers traveled overland to New Amsterdam, but Penelope remained
with her ill/injured husband. They were attacked by Indians who killed Penelope's husband and left her for dead with a fractured
skull, a hacked shoulder and a gash in her body that allowed her intestines to protrude. Penelope survived alone for several
days until two Indian men came along. The two debated over what to do with her, but they finally agreed to take her back
to their village where her wounds were sewed up using fish bone needles and vegatable fibers. Penelope recovered and lived
at the village, doing Squaw's work, for about a year. In 1644, a group of white settlers from New Amsterdam, hearing rumors
of her survival, visited the village and asked the Indians if Penelope could return with them. The whites finally bought
Penelope from the Indians and allowed to leave. Penelope eventually was remarried to Richard Stout. Penelope healed nicely
from her wounds as she lived to be 110 years old.
