Its hard to believe but I haven't updated the News section in over a year now. Lots of stuff has been happening, just not a lot I can talk about at the moment. I've recorded a few projects over the last year, its just that most of them have not seen the light of day yet. One that has is a track I did for E-dition magazine. The track is called Field of Gongs and appears on the free CD that comes with issue #4, that CD also includes a special excerpt from my CD Taksu.

Just doing a few updates to the site, mainly fixing broken links on the links page. Nothing new to report on the music front I'm slowly working away on things. I did master a retrospective CD for Ruben Garcia which should see the light of day in the not too distant future. For those of you who signed up for Soleilmoon's mailorder catalog you probably already know about the free compilation CD And I'll be the Wind which features an excerpt from Taksu. If not give Soleilmoon a call and see if you can get a free copy.
December 12, 2003
Well here it is, the end of the year already. My thanks to everyone who purchased a copy of Taksu, it has sold fairly well. I've been doing a few updates to this web site. Now that mp3.com is gone I have moved my audio files to a new site at soundclick.com. The audio link will take you there or you can go there directly from here. Also check out the studio page, lots has changed there of late, and I have added reviews of Taksu as they have become available.
Not a lot has been going on, at least anything I can mention at the moment. I just finished my latest teaching load for the semester so perhaps I will have more time to dedicate to recording new material. Most of my free time has been spent learning new tools in the studio. A film that I did sound design for has been making the rounds at most of the various festivals. It's called Match and has been well received. I will post a link to their website when I find it. That's about all for now.
July 22, 2003
Copies of Taksu have arrived at Soleilmoon headquarters today. You can order a copy of Taksu starting tomorrow (July 23rd) from Soleilmoon or from the Steve Roach website. Orders will begin shipping July 28th.
July 16, 2003
Just a quick word to let you know that Taksu will be released July 28th on Soleilmoon. In other news I have a new project in the works, but I can not say anything more about it at this time. More to come on this later. Also, my gamelan group will be performing this September at the Day Out of Time festival. Tickets are now available for pre-order. Check out the website for more information.
January 25, 2003
As usual my updates are far and few between. And now the big news, my next studio album is complete and ready to go, my first new release in almost three years. It is tentatively titled Taksu and will be released on Soleilmoon some time this spring. More to follow.
October 14, 2002
Sorry for the long silence but not a lot has been happening musically since my last update. Mainly because I have been getting lots of new tools for the studio. I've gotten a few new pieces of hardware but what's taking up the most time is the new software I have acquired. I recently made the switch from Cubase (which I've used for the last ten years) to Emagic Logic. Its been a rather steep learning curve but I feel it will probably be worth the growing pains once I get it under control.
As for my music there is some progress on not one but two new CDs. One is a long sprawling ambient work based on my field recordings from Indonesia, lots of processed sounds with some raw field recordings plus a few synths thrown in for good measure. The other is a more rhythmic shorter work. No timetable as to when they will be done. Look for something to appear next year probably on Soleilmoon.
February 12, 2002.
Sorry for the lack of updates but not a lot has been happening. I moved at the end of December so most of my time has been spent dealing with getting unpacked and everything else that comes along with moving. The studio is almost up and running and I am hoping to get back to working on my next project sometime this month. It looks like I will be making a guest appearance of sorts on the next Steve Roach/Vidna Obmana collaboration, actually they are using some of my field recordings as back drops to their pieces. Look for this release sometime in May on the Projekt label.
September 6, 2001.
Just finished up a few updates. I added a couple of pages about my research work in Bali. Go to the FAQ section or here to see what all the fuss was about, their are lots of pictures from my fieldwork. In the next few weeks look for more photos from my trips to Bali and Java.
Work on the new album has slowed to a crawl because I just started another semester of teaching, plus (and this is the main reason) most of my studio is in the repair shop! So far I've sent two synths and two recorders in for much needed repair with another synth and a couple of effect boxes needing to see a doctor! Its been an expensive month for my studio. As if I hadn't spend enough money already I also just got a Korg Oasys. Now for those of you who don't know what it is, its a sound card for your computer, but it also has several high quality dsp chips on board for synths and effects. An extra bonus is a program called synthkit which allows you to design your own synths for the card. I'm really looking forward to diving into this, expect to hear some very unusual timbers on my next CD.

Been a long time since I've done any updates. Last March I promised that mp3.com would release my first two albums. Well, right after I posted the info about this mp3 changed the way they deal with their artists, to the point where I decided to reconsider making the move. It's still a possibility but I haven't decided yet what to do. I am currently following up on a couple of other possibilities about releasing these titles somewhere else, in the mean while if you really want a copy of my early work I am willing to burn one-off CDrs for anyone who wants one. Just send me an email for the details.
On the new music front, I've been hard at work on the new CD. Unfortunately progress has been very slow, mainly due to malfunctioning equipment (broken synths and tape recorders amongst other things), plus learning some new gear I recently acquired. Hopefully I'll have most of my studio back from the repair shop soon so I can get back to work on it.
Projekt's CD shop Darkwave has recently added The Venerable Dark Cloud to its catalog, you can find it here.
The web site is finally being updated, although not much can be seen as of yet. The first new section is a photo page of my gamelan concerts. If you've ever wondered what the heck this gamelan thing is go to the FAQ section and take a look at the concerts page. I've uploaded several pictures of my performances from over the years. I will add more as I find them. Next up is a more comprehensive section of my travels and studies in Indonesia. Lots more to follow in the coming month, check back here often for updates.
March 22, 2001
Here is some good news! Sam at Projekt records just emailed me to let me know that he has several copies of Dali: The Endless Enigma available on Projekt's Darkwave website. The CD is still officially out of print, so once these copies are gone that's it for this CD. You can find it here.
March 16, 2001
Its been a long time since I have added any news. Haven't had much to report of late, but a couple of things are on the horizon so its time for an update.
First off, I will probably be re-releasing my first two albums (Point of Arrival and Book of Alchemy) on my mp3.com site. Which means that they will finally be available on CD. Currently most songs have been uploaded and are ready to go, I am just waiting for the art work to be finished, so look for them to be available sometime next month. Also appearing in the near future, Tracks Across The Universe a book on the history of ambient music, written by Jim Brenholts, will be available this May 2001 by pressTIGE in the USA. The comprehensive Ambient overview comes with a double CD of music including many previously unreleased tracks by the artists featured in the book. The double CD contains a previously unreleased track called Plane of Density.
Lastly, I am appearing as a guest on a couple of tracks on the soon to be released new Djam Karet CD, called The New Dark Age. It should be out sometime this May on the Cuneiform label.
September 9, 2000
Its been awhile since I've done any updates, basically I was sidetracked by various gamelan gigs during the spring, we were averaging 3 gigs a week plus rehearsals! All that playing just burned me out so I spent most of the summer just recouping/ working. A few musical projects are in the works but nothing I can divulge as of yet. I will announce them soon.
Other news, I now have a better audio page, it's located at mp3.com and contains so far over an hour of material. Here you will find examples from every album I have released to date, plus a few tracks from various compilation projects. I will in the next few days be adding some unreleased material, so do go have a listen. Click here to go there now.
March 28, 2000
At long last I now have copies of The Venerable Dark Cloud in my hot little hands. I will be selling them from my web site as soon as I can get some sort of order form up and running. In the mean while you can send orders to my email address here. Also check out my purchase page for vendors currently carrying this and my other CDs.
Also the compilation CD Between Sun and Moon was also recently released. You can pick up a copy of it directly from Soleilmoon. It's a budget release ($9.99 list) so if you've been curious about my music in the past but have not yet investigated it, then this might be a good opportunity to try some of it out without risking too much money.
Other news. I will be performing some electronic music this coming April 14th at Cal Arts. This will be for Katherine Wright's MFA recital. The nature of the performance is still shaping up at this point in time. I'll post more about it when I have more info. Here are some dates for some of my up coming gamelan performances:
April 21st at Cal Arts. MFA recital for Mathew Segal with Balinese gamelan
May 20th at Japan American Theatre, Los Angeles. Balinese gamelan concert
May 27th at Herbst Theater, San Francisco Memorial and Performing Arts Center, Balinese gamelan concert.
February 16, 2000
Between Sun and Moon will be released by Soleilmoon on February 22. I just talked to Amplexus they are still waiting for CDs of The Venerable Dark Cloud to arrive from the pressing plant, which should happen in about two weeks. All the artwork is finished and printed. It now looks like March before everything gets together so expect to see copies arriving at your favorite CD vendor by late March/ early April.
If you've been looking for a place to purchase my music and haven't been to the purchase portion of my site lately please pay it a visit, I've done a lot of work on it lately. If you click on one of my CD titles it will take you to a matrix showing the prices of various on line CD web stores, lowest prices are highlighted in white. Just click on the name of the store to take you to the site.
December 27, 1999
Here's yet another Venerable Dark Cloud update. According to Amplexus the artwork is done. The CDs should be pressed by the middle of next month (January), if everything goes according to plan copies should be available by the end of January/early February. It's been a long time coming but I think you'll find it's been worth the wait.
I recently discovered that a recording session I did for L. Subramaniam has finally made it to CD. It's called Global Fusion, you can find out more about it in my discography section.
Now that my string of fall concerts are over (I participated in about 20 gamelan concerts in the last three months) I'll be heading to the studio to begin a bunch of recordings, most importantly I'll be starting work on my next solo recording. I have also been asked to participate on several of my friends recording projects as well, so I have a lot to do in the next few weeks.
On the website side, I've fixed a few typos here and there, added a link in my Bio to a description of the Kronos concert I participated in way back in 1994, added two reviews of Indonesian Soundscapes, and added short examples of Lilin Dewa all in the real audio format.
November 15, 1999
It now appears that both Amplexus CDs (The Venerable Dark Cloud and Between Sun and Moon) will be delayed yet again until after the new year. Apparently a printing problem has caused the delay of Between Sun and Moon. Word from Amplexus is VDC should be done by xmas, which means copies will probably not arrive until after the new year.
September 17, 1999
Here's the latest news about my next release The Venerable Dark Cloud. Amplexus has informed me that its release has been delayed now until November. We are currently waiting for the artwork to be completed. As a consolation for those of you who have been waiting awhile to hear it, you can now hear a RealAudio excerpt of The Venerable Dark Cloud on my new audio page.
August 6, 1999
For the week of August 6-13 Hearts of Space radio will be broadcasting a show entitled Bamboo and Bronze in which my music will be featured. For a playlist, click here. For a list of stations and more about the weekly show, click here.
August 2, 1999
As I predicted the compilation CD Between Sun and Moon's release date has slipped yet again. It is now slated for a probably more realistic November 16th release. Also, it seems that it will now appear as a Soleilmoon release instead of under the Amplexus banner. Why? I have no idea.
July 4, 1999
I've mainly been fixing lots of typos, but I also finally added the original francais Oniric interview and an interview/review from The Union.
June 21, 1999
Well I've been digging through my archives of late and I found some more reviews which have been added to the Point of Arrival, Book of Alchemy, and Dali: the Endless Enigma sections, also some more reviews for Weightless, Effortless have recently surfaced. I also fixed some typos here and there.
On the musical side, the compilation Between Sun and Moon (Amplexus/Lunar) is currently scheduled for release August 31, 1999, but don't be surprised if it slips a bit.
June 14, 1999
Side Effects, the label which released Lilin Dewa has recently called it quits. Fortunately Lilin Dewa along with the entire Side Effects back catalog will continue to be available through the usual channels.
June 9, 1999
Today I added the new main page plus more reviews for Book of Alchemy, Dali: The Endless Enigma, Escape the Cage Vol. 3, and Weightless, Effortless. I've also added the Carpe Noctem interview, which can be found on the new interview link page along with all the other interviews.
June 7, 1999
Welcome to my first update! As of today I have changed the equipment list page, my discography and have added reviews for both Lilin Dewa and Point of Arrival. More stuff like this to come in the next few days.
On the musical side, a CD of my field recordings called Indonesian Soundscapes was recently released by Soleilmoon. Also two compilation projects with my music have recently appeared. Weightless, Effortless by Hypnos and Soundscapes Gallery Volume 3 put out by Lektronic Soundscapes. See the discography page for more info.
