A little about hunting bears with the use of hounds:
Hunting with hounds is by far the most exciting way to hunt bear. You start the hunt at day break, with 2-4 strike dogs on the truck. You travel along the mountain roads until the dogs strike. At this time you'll hear a roar on top of the truck. We'll get out and check the track to see if it's what we're looking for. If it's the right track we'll set loose 3-5 of the hounds. The hounds will follow the scent through the rough, rugged terrain of the Northern California Mountains. We will keep in-touch with the hounds by driving from point to point and listening to them as they roar through the canyons. When they tree the bear or bay up the bear, we will hear a different sound in their voices, and we'll know it's time to do our part.

We'll leave truck and start on foot to the sound of the hounds. If the bear stays on the ground and won't tree, we will have to try and get in front of it to take your bear. For our safety and that of the hounds, we will have to be real careful here. This will test you endurance for sure.

If the hounds tree the bear and when we get to them, you'll have time to catch your breath for a few minutes before you take your bear. I'm sure that your adrenaline will be pumping and you won't rest much. After I get the hounds tied back (for their safety), we get a good look at your bear. I'll have you get ready to make your shot. Once you have taken your bear we will have time for some pictures before we skin and quater it up. We'll head on back to the truck and camp for some dinner and good stories.

Hunting with the use of hounds is a sound and biological way to hunt for bear. And by far the most exciting. You can be more selective in the bear you take and there is less chance of taking a sow with cubs or letting a wounded bear get away. If we do catch a sow with cubs, we just let her go and go off a hunting again.

Our Camp: Camp is set up in the mountains, not far from where we are going to hunt. I'll have a couple of trailers set up and a tent or two. We have a camp-fire and usually spend evenings sitting around telling stories. Now and then other hunters will stop by a offer up some of their own hunting tales. Kinda' like a fishing tale, we all have a few of those to tell. Always good company and good talk.

What you'll want for your hunt: You are responsable to get your hunting license and bear tag from the Dept. of Fish and Game. If you are from another state you can contact them in Sacramento, CA. You must have your license and tag when you arrive for your hunt.
