This web site offers ideas and activities to help elementary school-aged children develop their perceptual fine-motor skills, with an emphasis on handwriting. It is intended as a resource for parents, teachers, and therapists.

Linda Kennedy, COTA/L

I am a Certified and Licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant with over 15 years of experience working in the field of pediatrics. Most of my time has been spent in the public school setting. I work with children who have perceptual fine motor difficulties and my goal is to help them to achieve success in fun, esteem-building ways.

Poor handwriting skills may be due to a variety of factors including poor positioning, visual perceptual difficulties, motor planning problems, muscle weakness, etc. An Occupational Therapist, along with the classroom teacher and parents, can act as a sort of "detective" to determine the areas of difficulty which might be preventing your child from experiencing success with handwriting and other perceptual fine-motor tasks.

My POSITIONING page offers an overview of the physical preparation necessary for a child performing handwriting tasks. It outlines proper seating, visual presentation of task, and achieving optimal grasp.

My HANDWRITING page offers suggestions and activities to help your child develop his handwriting skills and will be updated periodically.

My MOTOR SKILLS page hi-lights perceptual fine-motor activities that help to develop the skills necessary to be successful in the school setting. Enjoy!

My LINKS include Fine Motor toys and activities that will assist your child in the development of important visual perceptual and visual motor skills, as well as a vast array of Occupational Therapy Books covering many different diagnoses and topics. Enjoy your visit and feel free to e-mail me with any OT-related questions or concerns!
