Key to Numeric Indicators (Pitch Only):Octave Species (hundreds' place) Chromatic Prefix (tens' place) Class (units' place)*
0 - Central ( g - f# 1 ) 0 - Natural 0 - G
1 - A
1 - Upper ( g1 - f# 2 ) 1 - Sharp (or enharmonically 5 - B
equivalent flat) 2 - C
2 - Lower ( G - f# ) 3 - D
4 - E
6 - F*The sequence G-A-C-D-E-g represents the first, or lowest, segment in the anhemitonic gamut. Pitch classes are assigned arbitrarily in order to simplify the definition of the gamut in terms of white-key notes on the keyboard. See the abstract of "Scale in Southern Appalachian Folksong: a Reexamination" (College Music Symposium 26, pp. 77-91).
This numeric hierarchy reflects the frequent incidence of anhemitonicism in British Insular and Insular-American folksongs. MelAnaly was originally designed to aid in the analysis of those species. However, the procedure of placing C immediately after A in the pitch sequence, with B and F at the end of the sequence, does not restrict pitch encoding to anhemitonic melodies and does not preclude the use of the analytical procedure in the examination of dual-strain, standard-length melodies from outside the folksong sphere.

Unmeasured Ornaments
Code: 0.1 Keystroke: 9
Note: Unmeasured ornaments are considered only a) if they are attached to stressed beats and b) if they appear to be common to most of the variants in a batch. The second condition is unusual. Therefore, unmeasured ornaments normally are regarded as peculiarities of individual performance styles rather than integral parts of tune variants and therefore are ignored.

Unmeasured OrnamentsUnmeasured ornaments, if considered (see above, under "Duration") are given the stress codes of the non-ornamental notes to which they are attached. Hence they can be coded either with automatic, single-keystroke entry, as described above, or with manual input, as described below, depending on the main note in each case.
