Concept
and Functionality:
The first
version of CitiWeb was built to take advantage of the major advances in browser
technology represented by Netscape Navigator 2.0. Initial Intranet content was
sparse when the site was launched in March 1996, but it quickly grew,
necessitating a new site architecture by the end of 1996. The first version was
designed to invite and inspire Intranet content developers to align their
efforts with CitiWeb and to build content for it; in this, it was fabulously
successful. Among the innovative features of this first version of CitiWeb were
the following:
- Dynamically updated "Global Greeting" in 10 languages;
- JavaScript-enabled version for low-bandwidth users that suppressed loading
of animated GIF's and other images and provided an expanding/collapsing
text-based navigation system;
- Unique, configurable "billboard" navigation system; new "pushpins"
added for new sites
- Extensive Authoring section for CitiWeb developers (May 1996)
- Demonstration HTML tutorial built with Macromedia Authorware (June 1996)
