Thomas Drake Strong was born in Twillingate, Newfoundland. He married Ruth Hunter on 18 October 1867. He died in Indianapolis, Indiana on 2 May 1912 and was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Thomas Strong served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a member of the 26th Indiana Infanty, Company K, under Captain Junker. He enlisted as a Private on 30 August 1861. He reenlisted on 1 February 1864. He was mustered out, as a Corporal on 22 June 1865. He filed, from Indiana, for an "invalid" class pension on 16 Nov 1891, application #1071518, certificate #893508.
