John H. Strong: The Wells family, like the Strongs, are said to have come from
Ringwood,
Hampshire, England in 1793 (John Wells' notebook).
Edwin Aposhian reported that his given name was William. His source was data provided by Queen
Milley. However, Seary wrote "John, from
Ringwood (Hampshire),
settled at Joe Batts Arm in 1797, died in 1851, aged 72 (MUN Hist.)".
Joe Batts Arm Old Anglican Cemetery - This is a large cemetery located between the Anglican
Church and the ocean.

The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Three Arms at
http://enl.cuff.com/entry/82/8217.htm, "In 1838 John and William Wells of Back Harbour,
Twillingate built a fishing room on Three Arms Island for the summer fishery". Does this refer
to John and his brother, John and his father, or John and his uncle or cousin?
Below are details of a Wells family from Twillingate. There is no proof that the William Wells
(who married Mary Burge) is the same William Wells listed above. The middle names of Burge,
strongly suggests some kind of connection. If there is a connection why wasn't John Burge Wells
listed with the other baptism records (i.e. of Hannah, Thomas, William, and Jane? Could there
be a mistake about his (John's) given name (that it was actually Thomas)?

all fishermen.
Newfoundland Wills
Volume 2, Page 216 dated March 1 1839, codicil dated July 5 1851.
William Burge, Twillingate, planter, formerly of Marnhull near Sturminster Newton, Dorset.
Wife Martha.
Daughters Mary Wells and Martha House.
Sons-in-law William Wells, John House, and James Inder.
Grandsons William House and Job Inder.
Granddaughters Asenath Inder, Isabella Inder and Mary Anne Drake.
The headstone of William and Sophia Wells.
John Holwell's notes: "I should also state that much of what I have on this branch of my tree
is from Kevin Anstey. William married Mary Burge, daughter of William and Martha (Smith) Burge.
By my account, William and Mary had three children - William (1806 - 11 Aug 1894), Frances
(b. abt 1815 - ?), and Phillip. The William (Sr.) that I note could be the same one as you
state having arrived at Twillingate from
Ringwood but it is odd that neither of the children I have are any that you noted.
"William Wells (Jr.) married a woman by the name of Sophie (abt 1818 - 8 Sep 1905) and I have
no additional information on Phillip. Frances married John Freeman (1805 - 10 Nov 1884) of Poole,
Dorset, England. Frances was commonly known as Fanny and her birth year is approximate.
[Note - William (Jr.) and Sophie had five children, Sophia (b. 25 Jun 1845, d. 6 Jul 1905),
Henry (b. Abt 1848, d. 9 May 1919), Agnes (d. 3 Dec 1930), Job, and Theophilus.]
"Somewhere the ancestors of former Premier Clyde Wells ties in.
Clyde is the son of Ralph, and grandson of Samuel Wells of Twillingate.
I'm not sure where Samuel fits in."
Tom Wells wrote: "I come from the Phillip Wells (son of William) line. I'm not really positive
it's the same one but it sure seems to be. Phillip had a son Thomas Burge Wells who lived in
Back Harbour (Back Harbour - Burge connection). Phillip is also the father of Samuel Wells,
there is the connection to Clyde Wells (former premier of Newfoundland)."

named Ralph (b. Sep 1905 at Twillingate), listed in the 1921 census for Back Harbour at
