Lovell's 1871 Directory for Nipper's Harbor lists a Charles and Robert Batstone, both planters.
According to the 1921 census for Jackson's Cove Melvina Pelly was the adopted daughter of
Charles Wm Batstone. It also lists her as being born in Nick's Nose Cove. Other sources say
she was from Rattling Brook.
Their family photograph.
Charles was born and died at Jackson's Cove. Cordelia was born at Jackson's Cove. They share a
headstone at Jackson's Cove.
They were married at Jackson's Cove by Rev. Vickers. Mary Knight Tuffin, Cordelia's sister,
was a witness.
OSWELL is listed in the 1921 Census for Silverdale as being born in Jackson's Cove in December
1894. Listed with him is his wife Eunice (b. Feb 1899 at Harry's Harbour) and their daughter
Vivian (b. Nov 1921 at Silverdale). However, this conflicts with other information I have. That
is that OSWALD was born between Wilfred (b. Nov 1900) and Wilburt (b. Jan 1903). He supposedly
was a carpenter and moved to the US before the 1921 census. He was a member of Newfoundland's
"First Five Hundred" in WW 1 with Regimental Number 227.
The obituary of Emma May (Crowell) Batstone.
Charles William BASTON (BATSTONE) of James & Jane (KNIGHT) was baptised on September 9, 1857 at Jacksons Arm (Cove) when he
was 2 months old.
