The Marsh Family, by John Howard Strong : William Marsh was born in 1824 in Wareham, England and died June 7, 1905. For some misdemeanor he was severly beaten by the headmaster of the school he was attending and locked in an upstairs room. He crawled through a window and slid down the gutter pipe to the ground. He ran to the Harbour and got on a small ship that was just leaving for Newfoundland. He settled in Purcell's Harbour, Twillingate and was hired as a bookkeeper by John Anstey, a local merchant.

His headstone in the United Church Cemetary at Little Harbour says:
"Sacred
to
the memory of
William Marsh
A native of Wareham, Dorset
England
Who died June 7, 1905
Aged 81 years
Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep
From which none ever wakes to weep"
