The Incendiary Confessed that He Was Incited to Crime. ley's Island, in Notre Dame Bay, on Wednesday last, destroyed the premises of Joseph Strong, manager of the Trading Company, consisting of a shop, a dwelling, and two stores. The fire originated in the fish store, and quickly spread to the adjoin- ing buildings. A high wind prevailing at the time carried the flames in all directions, menacing the remainder of the settlement. The thick woods surrounding the village finally caught fire, and the inhabitants were obliged to work for many hours to get the flames under control.     George Raines, a resident, was suspected of having started the fire and, when arrest- ed, he made a confession. He said he threw a lighted match among a lot of in- flammables stored there. He had no griev- ance against the owners, he said, but he started the fire at the suggestion of one Snow, who owed Mr. Strong some money. Snow was arrested. The loss is $30,000, without insurance.
