Calgary
September 2005
Mamma Mia! had a great week in Calgary. Five us went to the local Hy's Steakhouse (which I've just learned closed in 12/06)
and just had one of the best nights ever. Our presenter had a terrific opening night party for us (unfortunately I can't remember
the name of the restaurant, but I'll find it eventually) and the audiences were great. There were also some nice walking areas,
parks and great shopping downtown. We used the local transit line to get to the theatre, and there was a sweet little neighborhood,
Kensington(?) one stop before the theatre with some nice places to eat and shop. Keep an eye out for the cowboy boot outlet
near the railroad tracks. Oh, and the night out two-steppin'. In all, a very pleasant week.
In dining with friends, they reminded me of a few other things: try to get to Banff and Lake Louise on a day off if at
all possible.

Mixed feelings from people in the cast. Some were very happy with their rooms, others not so much. I was very happy with mine.
These are all suite-style rooms, very spacious. There was a grocery store not too far away (probably a short cab ride). There
is a spa located in the hotel (see below), which was very nice. I did have a billing issue with this hotel, as did a few others.
Make sure to keep it clear if you hold a room with a credit card and pay cash, that your card gets cleared, not charged.

As I mentioned we used the public transportation to get to and from the theatre. It was a light rail train that we caught
about two blocks from our hotel. I was trying to remember how we got around, and it suddenly came to me. Check out the website
for maps, routes, etc.

A lovely park just a short walk from the Calgary 5. Simply gorgeous when we were there in the summer. A nice way to spend
a little time on your own. There is also a restaurant located in the park that you should really check out (see below).

Little Greek restaurant in the Kensington area (the stop just before you get to the auditorium, I think). Great hummus, sweet
place. Very nice service.

Our head carpenter at the time we were in Calgary loved to go out western dancing. He found this place. It was a lot of fun:
dance floor, mechanical bull, great dry ribs! Check with the locals if this is still a good place to go, but we had fun there
a couple of years ago.

This was an amazing restaurant located in Prince's Island Park. They strive to feature the foods of the region in some terrific
recipes. A big local award winner. Great for brunch. You should call for their schedule and probably reservations. Great
food in a stunning setting.

Located in the Calgary 5 hotel; it was a nice short trip in my sweats to get a massage. As with the rooms, there were mixed
reviews for the spa. Most of us had a good experience. My massage was very good and reasonable that I recall.
