January 2007

Technically, St Louis was a repeat city for me, since I was in my second week of rehearsal on my first visit in February of 2005. This time around, we once again we played the Fabulous Fox Theatre. This one is just as glorious, but very different from the one in Atlanta.

I didn't get out much on either visit. The first time I was really busy and tired; the second time, I was in a great hotel with a kitchen and recuperating from the holidays. The city's downtown area has gentrified a bit in the two years between visits with a few new restaurants, and, of course, a trip is necessary to The Arch!

I stayed here in 2005 and a few company members were here in 2007 as well. This was a lovely, classy hotel. The concierge, on my first trip, was so helpful to us, recommending restaurants, giving directions, etc. The rooms varied in size: some could be quite small, but they were beautifully appointed.

Brand new and beautiful in Jan 2007, and a quick drive to the theatre. A bit more than your standard, reliable Residence Inn. This one had a lovely staff; breakfast served daily, and, I think, a happy hour as well. The rooms were just lovely.

Museums, Etc.

The Arch
Memorial Drive at the Riverfront
See www.stlouisarch.com for driving details

What to say? The Arch is one of the major landmarks/monuments in the country: the monument to Westward expansion. You should at least drive by and see it up close. But do try to go to the exhibits and if you have the stomach for it (I don't), take the tram to the top of the arch. It only sways between 1/2" and 18" in the wind when you're up there on the observation deck. Yikes!

City Museum

I did not get to the City Museum, but many of my company members did. From what I've read and heard, it is amazing. It is part museum, part playground, created from repurposed items such as chimneys, construction cranes and old, abandoned planes. There are giant slides and all kinds of cool stuff to do and explore. It's as much for adults as it is kids. They are open very late on the weekends, so you can go after your shows! Be sure to check the hours as they can vary.

Terrific bar and restaurant that I enjoyed both times I was in St. Louis. They have a small market on the property as well with some tasty treats to take back to the hotel. The menu offers hearty, interesting combos such as pork chops with smoked shrimp grits, and corn meal encrusted halibut with a green apple vinnaigrette. I didn't have either of these since the menu changes frequently, but what I did have was terrific every time. Check it out!
