March 2006

One of our rare two-week stays in a year of one-weekers. Denver was lovely, chilly and slightly snowy. We had a bit of rehearsal as well as our B-roll shoot, so I didn't get out much. But with a brand new hotel and a kitchen, who wanted to get out! I'm also working from memories that are a year old at the time of this writing.

Hotels

Residence Inn
Denver City Center
1725 Champa Street
Denver, CO 80202

This was a brand new Residence Inn. I think it opened maybe a month before we arrived. Everyone just loved it. The staff was great, there was breakfast every day, and snacks at Happy Hour during the week. They had both studios and two bedroom suites available. The rooms were beautiful if not particularly big. Lots of light. Laundry facilities onsite. Just great; we all wanted to stay here for good!

Local chain. Driving distance from downtown. Good food: salads, sandwiches. This is one of my Denver friend's favorite restaurants.

Rocky Mountain Diner
800 18th Street
Denver, CO 80202

Local joint; much better than a typical diner. Big crowds at lunchtime so get there early. Great biscuits and gravy. The cakes are huge. Good solid diner food in a nice setting. Just around the corner from the Residence Inn.

Another nice steakhouse in one of our many Monday night dinners. Not cheap, but very good service, food, etc. Located near the Oxford Club (see spas). A few blocks off of the train line.

Denver, CO 80202

Nice sushi place. It was in a small complex, so it's set back off of the street. Popular with the locals. Pretty good sushi if I recall. Quite a few of us ate there several times.

Miscellaneous

Atlas Case Company
1380 S. Cherokee Street
Denver, CO 80223
303-778-7058

Once I had re-signed for a second year I decided I wanted a real "road box." I found this place that carried ATA cases in stock that fit the Equity dimensions (90" linear). I did have wheels put on mine that bumped it slightly over that measurement. Atlas Cases was just great to work with. Since we were in Denver two weeks, I went to order it my first week and had it delivered to my hotel the second week. It's been holding up just great and it made my life so much easier.

Denver Butterfly Pavilion
6252 W 104th Ave
Westminster, CO 80020
Phone: 303-469-5441
Fax: 303-469-5442

Located about 10 miles outside of Denver, this is a fun day trip. The pavilion has butterflies, bugs, a tarantula named Rosie that you can hold. The centerpiece is a huge atrium where butterflies "roam" freely. They even release new butterflies every day. You won't need a lot of time to spend there, but it's pretty cool. Wear bright to attract the butterflies to you.
