They observe predator-prey relationships in a terrarium and habitat requirements by studying live toads. Students observe osmosis with experiments using dialysis tubing to understand cell structure. They study plant cells with microscopes and prepared slides, classify plants by leaf type, observe stomata on leaves, compare plant photosynthesis and respiration, design experiments using poly sorb crystals to keep plants watered, test germination rate of seeds, and discover what yeast needs to grow. Animal experiments test habitat needs of pill bugs, earthworms, brine shrimp, fish, crickets, etc. Students compare and classify vertebrates and invertebrates in the animal lab. They experiment with refraction and use diffraction glasses to separate white light into the spectrum. Students experiment with lenses to discover how telescopes, cameras and projectors work. They compare shadows of different materials, make sundials, and make sunlight prints. In experiments with color students use colored acetates to absorb light and make colors 'disappear'.
