Shortly thereafter he joined the Masonic Lodge in Dublin. 2 CONT When he was about 22 years old he left Ireland for America. His occupation 2 CONT is listed in the ___ Census as Farmer/Planter. The family believes that he, 2 CONT with others, was motivated to leave Ireland for a country where there was more 2 CONT religious freedom. He landed in Georgia and later went to Livingston, Alabama. 2 CONT He was a member of the first Livingston School Commission. He served as 2 CONT County Clerk and Recorder of Sumter County, Alabama (County Seat Livingston) 2 CONT for many years. All the County Records made by him were written in ink with a 2 CONT goose quill. These many records are, as we understand it, well preserved and 2 CONT are examined by many people because of their accuracy, and the fine penmanship 2 CONT which was free from blots or erasures. There are many of his letters that he 2 CONT wrote to Thomas Bradford Savage (his son) in the hands of the Leslie J. Savage 2 CONT family and other members of the family. One story from Martha Savage is that 2 CONT James's sister converted from Protestant to Catholic and became a Nun. James 2 CONT promised to rip off her veil if she did become a Nun. He did so and because 2 CONT of the public furor had to stow away in a barrel on board a ship for America. 1 NOTE DEATH: He died in Livingston, Alabama and the tomb at his grave has all the 2 CONT Masonic emblems on it with the inscription: "Erected to the memory of James 2 CONT Savage, Esqr. He owned a plantation four miles in 2 CONT the Country. Fanny Pace Goodman spend a good bit of time at his home. During 2 CONT the Winter we lived on the River, while in the Summer, we went to the 2 CONT Plantation. He then had three single daughters Aunt Lizzie, who married 2 CONT Charles Figures; Mary who married Dr. T. B. Savage, and Lavernia, who married 2 CONT Dr. Isaac Newton of Arkansas. About this time his wife died and a few years 2 CONT later he remarried. After that we seldom visited him since his children were 2 CONT violently opposed to his wife. He closed out his Mercantile business and 2 CONT lived on the Plantation about 3 years prior to his death there. He had his 2 CONT Minister, Reverend Shahine, of Georgia, come twice a year to hold meetings in 2 CONT the Big Loom-house. Great preparations were always made for such meetings. 2 CONT Everyone who came to Church was fed, horses were cared for. His house was 2 CONT comfortable and bountifully supplied. He was County Clerk in early days. 2 CONT Even until the time of his death, he filled some office and handled public 2 CONT money. He had one son, John W. Bell, who married Miss Nancy Robinson. John W. 2 CONT Bell was a planter and lived nine miles from Coffeville. He had five 2 CONT daughters and one son. He was a Captain in the Confederate Army and died 2 CONT during the War in Georgia. He was also one of the early county commissioners 2 CONT according to the History of Clarke Co. by Rev. Ball. In the History of Clarke 2 CONT County by Rev. Ball, Joel Bell was referred to as one of the early county 2 CONT commisioners (p342). 1 FAMS @F72@ 0 @I260@ INDI 1 NAME Nancy Ann /Coates/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 PLAC Probably SC 1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: She was the daughter of John Coates of Newberrie, South Carolina. 2 CONT I think she married in South Carolina. The Coates family was Scotch and came 2 CONT to North Carolina sometime in the seventeen hundreds. They first lived in 2 CONT Saulsberry, North Carolina and owned considerable land. I don't know whether 2 CONT they bought or patented their lands - they may have been ceded to them by the 2 CONT King. John Coates then located in Newberrie where he had considerable land 2 CONT and leased the ground for 99 years, where Newberrie was build - donating the 2 CONT Public Square. The lease expired during the Confederate War. All of the 2 CONT original heirs, but one, were then dead. The one living heir, Uncle Billie 2 CONT Coats, sold his interest in 1800. Some little effort was made to investigate 2 CONT this estate to determine whether or not living descendents had any interest 2 CONT but the families were scattered they could not unite to agree upon one Lawyer 2 CONT to represent them, so each branch sent its own representative. 2 CONT It is believed they were paid in hush money, since we know that some members 2 CONT of the families of the original heirs came back after investigating, with 2 CONT considerable money. John Coates' brother, Andrew, went to New York and 2 CONT established the factory that manufactured the Coates thread. I suppose some 2 CONT of his family are still connected with the factory. Uncle Billie Coates came 2 CONT to Alabama in 1800 and opened a farm at Clarksville, Clark County, Ala. The 2 CONT first Courts held in the County were at his house. He died in 1870 supposed 2 CONT to be one hundred years old. He was said to be scrupulously exact and honest 2 CONT in all his dealings and lived every day as if that was to be his last. He was 2 CONT on good terms with everyone. Shortly before his death, he was baptized. He 2 CONT was carried from his bed to the baptismal pool and immersed. A former 2 CONT servant, then blind and about 80 years old, was baptized at the same time. 2 CONT The more aged and feeble master, ever careful and kind of his servants, 2 CONT remained on his bed after his own baptism and would not be removed until Uncle 2 CONT Joe was baptized. 1 FAMS @F72@ 1 FAMC @F172@ 0 @I261@ INDI 1 NAME John /Pace/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1806 1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: He was a Capt. in Creek and Seminole Indian War.
