Review Course Outline and expectations for the course; Read: "The Man Who Couldn't Read". Individually, write a response paper. Intro to course web site
Homework: Street Lawyer , Read Chapters 1 - 6. Write a Reader Response paper. Make sure you have all books.


Week 2 - Sept. 19

Discussion Groups, Street Lawyer,Chapters 1-6; handed in Reader Response Paper#1; Academic Encounters Pre-reading and 1: Stress. Reminder: Bring Academic Encounters to class every week.

Library Visit and Midsemester Project: Using the SIRS or the library catalog, find a magazine, newspaper, or journal article about a topic related to Street Lawyer. Midterm Exam Next Week: You'll have to read something new, answer questions about the book, and paraphrase a few sentences.
Homework: Street Lawyer, Finish the book; Midterm Exam on Oct. 31st.


Week 8 - Oct. 31

Midterm Exam Homework: Make sure that you have the next book, Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen. We'll start the book next week.


Week 9 - Nov. 7

Midterm Project Due Begin Black and Blue; If you don't have a book yet, go to a bookstore now. Try any large bookstore.
Homework: Black and Blue Read pages 1 - 68; Answer the questions on the handout.


Week 10 - Nov. 14

Review Pages 1 - 68; Discussion; Handout on Court Procedures for Victims of Domestic Violence (Read it); We worked on Writing Summaries and did one in class; We discussed "How to take a True/ False Quiz"
Homework: Black and Blue: Read 69-135; Do the handout I gave out in class. Read "Smoking" in Academic Encounters. If you were absent, get your handouts from the instructor.
