Course Description

ESL 081 is a part of the fifth level of ESL instruction at Union County College. The purpose of the course is to help you become more familiar with contemporary American narrative and expository readings. You will read newspaper articles, essays, articles related to subjects in your books, and readings on the Internet. You will also read two fictional works on contemporary topics. A second purpose of the course is to help you write comments about the readings.

Academic Encounters - Reading (textbook)
Street Lawyer by John Grisham (novel)
Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen (novel)
A good English-English dictionary (if you don't already have one) Suggested: American Heritage publishes a good one.
A public library card and a UCC library card

Course Procedures & Activities

  • Both in-class and at-home readings will be required. It is essential that all students do the readings in order to participate in class discussions.
  • Regular quizzes will be given to check your comprehension.
  • Written reactions or summaries of readings will be required after each assignment. For example, if the assignment is to read pages 1 - 25, you will be expected to write 1-2 pages.
  • All assignments should be neatly written or typed and labeled with your name, the date, and the chapters being covered.
  • Summaries of articles from the textbook and from other sources.
  • There will be a midterm and a final exam.
  • There may also be a midterm project and a final project.

Course Evaluation

Grades will be based on overall performance:
  • 25% - Reading reactions, homework preparation, participation
  • 25% - Quizzes
  • 25% - Midterm and midterm project
  • 25% - Final and final project
  • Grades: A B+ B C+ C D+ D UF (stopped attending) F
  • Poor attendance will negatively affect your grade.
  • A student who does not attend the final exam without notifying the instructor beforehand may not receive a grade higher than a D.
