THE FRUIT SHARE We also offer a fruit share consisting of 20 weeks of fresh, local fruit. We organically grow only a few varieties ourselves and arrange for additional fruit from very capable fruit farmers located near us. Please note that only the berries are grown organically; the other fruit is produced using IPM or low-spray practices. In the spring, a share might consist of two quarts of strawberries, or a pint of blueberries plus a pound of sweet cherries. In mid-summer it might be two pounds of purple plums and two to three pounds of fresh peaches. In the fall it might contain a half-gallon of cider and three pounds of Gala apples. This year, we will be adding melons grown at the Moses Farm to the list of items included in the fruit share. (We will be growing our own melons this year, but our hope is to make them available to everyone as a part of the vegetable share.) This season's fruit share will be $140 for 20 weeks. Note about our future in fruitLocally grown organic berries are difficult for us to source in adequate quantities or at reasonable prices so this year we are planting our own berries! We have purchased blueberry, gooseberry, red, black, yellow & purple raspberries, table grapes and strawberry plants from local suppliers. We expect the strawberries to bear fruit this year, with the others ready in 2010 and 2011. Stay tuned! THE FLOWER SHARE Our flower share consists of our own organically grown, fresh cut flowers. You'll receive your first flowers in the middle of June, at about the time your first vegetables arrive. Some weeks you'll receive arrangements made from a variety of flowers, other weeks you'll have large bunches of a single variety to choose from. We grow more than thirty varieties of cut flowers. We select varieties for their beautiful colors, fragrance, and long-lasting qualities. Your first bouquets might have spice-scented stock, campanula, a beautiful deep blue, bell-shaped flower, and Bells of Ireland, with its wonderful light green foliage. Next, you'll receive sweet peas, snapdragon spikes, godetia, sweet William, lavatera, larkspur and brightly colored Asiatic lilies. In the heat of the summer, you're distributions will include China asters, rose-like lisianthus, sunflowers, rudbeckia, dahlia-flowered zinnias, and celosia. We think you'll enjoy this year's selections. Your flowers will arrive in a bucket of water, nestled in a plastic sleeve so that they travel well. You'll need a vase with a 4-6" opening and tall enough for 18-30" stems. We offer one full share (10 weekly deliveries) for $120.
For a second year CSA members will have the opportunity to order fresh, pastured eggs from Elihu Farm, a neighbor of Ted and Jan Blomgren. Below is a description of their egg operation. Our hens live as natural a life as we can provide, eating locally mixed grain, with minerals and vitamins, while foraging for grass, clover, seeds, bugs and worms. They receive no antibiotics or other medications. They graze on our fields for three seasons, in a movable shelter (called a ChickInn), surrounded by movable fencing. They go inside the shelter at night, for protection from predators. They reward us with the best eggs we have ever eaten, and they offer a healthful bonus. Eggs from pastured hens are known to be higher in Vitamins A, E, and some Bs, and in Omega-3 fatty acids, and lower in cholesterol, compared to eggs from conventionally raised chickens. We are happy to offer this bounty to you -- eggs with thick whites, rich orange yolks, strong shells, and wonderful flavor. The egg share consists of 22 week delivery of primarily large to extra large eggs that are minimally washed without the use of chlorine and packed in paper cartons. (We will reuse or recycle all cartons returned to us.) One dozen per week, $ 99.00
For the past 4 years Windflower Farm has offered a winter share. The share comprises a wide assortment of storage vegetables, fresh salad greens from our greenhouses, locally grown apples and freshly pressed cider. Shares are delivered once a month, on Saturday mornings, from December through March at the New Leaf Cafe distribution site. Members should expect to hear more about this share in the fall.
