Color Theory Online Tutorial

In this project, created in the Multimedia Authoring: Advanced Web class and continued in the Instructional Development and Production class, I studied the principles and physics of color theory, to design a Web site to explain the principles, and ways to use color theory in design.

I surveyed a group of my classmates to learn about their interest in this topic, and found that many did not have formal training in this subject. Most of the respondents said they would be interested in learning about color theory.

Before I began constructing the project, I first researched the topic of color theory and found it to be quite complex. I learned quite a bit in my studies, and was able to get to know the subject well enough to make an outline of basic concepts that I wanted to include in my project. My background in art and the graphic design field was helpful in deciding what topics to include in the Color Properties and Color Models sections. I learned to use Fireworks to create and export a Web page, and learned to use Coursebuilder, which was then an extension for Dreamweaver, to incorporate a quiz into an online project.

ILT Competencies Demonstrated

  • Competency 1: Reflective Practice
This project allowed me to use evaluation and cycles of reasoning to design a learning project. I was able to learn new tools and technologies while creating the project.

  • Competency 2: Planning and Analysis
To create the Color Theory project, I used planning and analysis in conducting a needs assessment. I analyzed my audience, program content, goals and objectives, and appropriate media and technology.

  • Competency 4: Evaluation and Assessment
This project allowed me the opportunity to use evaluation and assessment. My formative evaluation helped me to create the project for the intended audience. I incorporated self-quizzes using technology to provide an informal performance measure. I used my survey as a method to investigate a learning problem, the fact that many of my respondents wanted to know more about this topic but had little or no formal training in it.
