OLD WEBSITES

You have all read about the mudslides south of Naples in May of 1998. This reminds me of an earlier experience.

On a trip to Italy in April of 1998, I intended to visit Sorrento. So I decided to find out what the web had to say about Sorrento. Through AltaVista I found a website issuing warnings about landslides on the Sorrento peninsula, that it was isolated, and that you could travel to and from Sorrento by boat, only. I almost canceled my trip. However, I could not get confirmation about the problems in Sorrento, so I took the chance.

Not until I got to Rome did I learn that the landslides on the Sorrento peninsula occurred in February of 1996, not in 1998. Someone, put up a website in 1996 and forgot about it. Actually I think the company went out of business because they do not answer e-mail, etc.

The lesson: Be careful about undated websites.
