Random dumb thoughts

This page is to put those little weirdnesses of life that don't really fit anywhere else, or aren't worth a page of their own

Okay, I was going to blog today to keep up the streak, but I'm brain dead. Didn't have any real profound thoughts.

Wait -- here's one random thought. I think I might have to name the iMac ET -- it keeps phoning home. When I went online the first time, it went out and synched up the clock. It goes out and gets CD track listings (very nifty, but still), checks for software updates and registers itself.

I guess we just delude ourselves that we control the machines.

Coming at you live from Lily's brand new iMac! Woo hoo! It's amazing what a brand new speedy processor and mega mega RAM can do. Of course, this is a brand new operating system, and I've discovered that I don't have a clue how to do anything on this machine. The UNIX-type base may make it more stable, but this machine actually wants things to be in certain places and locations. Fascist.

One of the niftiest things so far is iTunes. In the past, when I put in a non-enhanced CD, I had to type in all the information about the CDs -- artists, track names, etc. Now, all I do is throw it in, click "get CD information" and it goes out on the internet and gets all the CD information from some huge database. No more retyping everything.

I'll tell you something else, this computer will do wonders for getting rid of those pesky pounds I picked up on vacation. I just looked up and realized that I've been sitting here for four hours and haven't gotten around to dinner yet. No more sitting on the couch and snacking.

Just a short blog, but a blog nonetheless.

The desk looks so empty.

I packed up the old desktop today, since in theory my new desktop iMac will be arriving tomorrow or Tuesday. I've even polished the desktop to get rid of all that lovely dust buildup that had been lurking there, because let's face it -- who really moves heavy objects around when dusting? Okay, who really dusts anymore? So now there's a big empty clean space on the desk. To be fair, it actually looks good -- I hate clutter. I think that the new iMac should take up less space so the desktop should remain somewhat clear.

I do enjoy polishing the furniture, although I hate dusting. I think it's because dusting is pointless -- thirty seconds after dusting the dust has all resettled. Polishing makes things shiny, and being born in the year of the monkey, I like bright shiny objects. I think it's also why I like glass-topped wrought iron furniture -- I like furniture you can clean with Windex and for which you don't need coasters. So I've got a nice, shiny, clean lemony-smelling desktop and printer table just sitting here, waiting.

Where the hell is the box for the printer? I know I have it, and I even remember seeing it about a year ago and putting it someplace to get it away from the center of the floor where it had been living. It's not like there are that many places inside this apartment where boxes can go. I've looked under the bed, on the top shelves of all the closets, inside the box closet, and inside all the big boxes -- all the places where the printer box could be. Can't find it. So now the old printer is in the middle of the floor where the printer box used to be.

To calm myself down until the new computer arrives, I'm sitting here watching the Ugly People Movie, otherwise known as Ocean's 11 (the remake). Someone has got to sit there are watch all those unattractive people in horrible clothes stumble through a movie. Might as well be me.

I did have a nice day, though. It was a gorgeous day, so I decided to get out of the house, go for a long walk, watch a movie, sit in a coffee house and read, and take myself out for dinner. The movie was "Bend it Like Beckham" -- pretty good for what it was, kind of a "My Big Fat Sikh Wedding". I can recommend it, and you don't have to like footie to like the movie. There have been a slew of movies about being Asian (read Indian or Pakistani) in Britain, and this one fits in well with those. The book is about the evolution of language (well, I think it's interesting), called "The Tower of Babel" by John McWhorter, and the dinner was a very spicy bowl of Vietnamese Hot Sour Mushroom Soup with Shrimp.

And that's the random thoughts for today. Not exciting, but it's a blog for those of you keeping score.
