Here's another random tidbit I'll toss out to appease the peanut gallery....

Speaking of peanuts -- what the hell is it with raisins in trail mix? I don't care what kind you get, where you go, how much picking through the self serve bins to avoid them you do, you always seem to wind up with a bag full of raisins and about four nuts. I don't even like raisins and shouldn't really eat them on my diet, but I can't find other combinations of mixes that I like without them. I look for the pre-mixed packages with the fewest raisins, but when I get home and open them, it turns out that they were all hiding in the middle under a protective coating of the other ingredients. They're crafty little buggers, and they seem to have an unnatural interest and love affair with me that is completely unrequited.

So I've been going and getting bags of trail mix (or student's delight or dieter's delight -- those seem to be the names of the combinations I like -- combinations of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, cashews little apple pieces, date pieces, peanuts and of course a BILLION RAISINS) and then spending a whole bunch of time picking out the raisins and throwing them out. In most cases, they're not even good raisins -- dry and flavorless. I know the California raisin growers board will probably put a hit on me, but I'm open for all suggestions to stamp out the raisin. And DON'T sub 'em with cranberries, either. I also pick out the organic "unsulphured" apricots -- also way too sweet and the organic ones just taste weird. There are some things that chemicals just improve, I'm sorry to say.

I suspect I'm going to have to go to Whole Foods and buy a million little bags of each ingredient that I want and mix up my own batch -- what a pain in the tuchus. Either that or I COULD just stop eating the mega-caloric mix, but that would be too easy....
