Artist Statement:
Art is an act of love and faith, and the pursuit of its perfection is nothing less than the pursuit of personal bliss and self actualization. When drawing or painting, I focus more on the process than the end product, because that is where the magic happens. I love drawing the figure, which informs other subjects. Each flower, object or place has a personality, which I aim to capture just as surely as I aim to achieve a likeness of a human subject.
For me, anything other than the pure adoration of the natural world is probably frustrating, which is why color, light and atmospheric effects inspire me. This can involve the play of light and shadow on a human or still life subject, or the beauty in things that are perhaps usually considered ugly, such as a cut-price store (see Giant Dollar ).
My figures either directly confront the viewer or are involved in private moments. I aim to integrate my subjects into their environment, and in all my work, form, color, and light are of primary importance. In John Cahman Reading, 1999, oil, light and shadow define form, and the subject is lost in his own world. In Portrait of Martha Stevens, 1998, oil, the subject directly confronts the viewer from an integrated environment that hints at her life's journey. I draw and paint directly, and, when necessary, take reference photographs. Besides carrying a camera, I keep a sketchbook in which I collect ideas for future works.
Ultimately, I hope to generate a conclusion in the viewer's mind that our world is worth reinspecting, that it should not be taken for granted, but visually and emotionally savored.
