Science

General Science Lab (Grades 6-8)

This hands-on opportunity will introduce the student to experimentation and the scientific method.  Students will produce a “Lab Journal” while learning how to document the experiments.  Lab topics will introduce physical science & living science concepts.  This lab will meet twice monthly and follow the Apologia General Science labs.

 

Physical Science (Grades 8-10)

Using both tutorials & labs, this study in physical (non-living) portion of Creation covers Earth’s atmosphere, the hydrosphere including the chemical nature of water, weather, Earth’s structure, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, sound, light, and an introduction to astrophysics.

Prerequisite: General Science recommended but not required; Pre-Algebra or Algebra ½

 

Biology (Grades 9-12)

This course includes both tutorials & labs.  Topics covered include microbiology, classification of living organisms, cellular biology, genetics, zoology, & botany. 

Text:  Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Biology – 2nd Edition

Prerequisite:  Life Science or General Science is recommended but not required.

 

Chemistry (Grades 10-12)

Combining tutorials & labs, this course includes measurements in chemistry, thermodynamics, atomic & molecular structure, chemical equations, mole concept, stoichiometry, acid/base chemistry, solutions, gases, reaction kinetics, and redox reactions.

Pre-Algebra (Grades 7-9)

This covers basic introductory algebraic concepts.

Prerequisite:  Solid skill in basic arithmetic.

 

Algebra 1 (Grades 8-10)

This course expands the student's knowledge & skill in solving equations, graphing equations & functions, scientific notation, ratio & percent, unit conversions, and geometry.

Prerequisite:  Pre-Algebra highly recommended but not required.

 

Algebra 2 (Grades 9-12)

This course covers all topics that are traditionally covered in second-year algebra with the addition of a considerable amount of geometry.  In fact, students completing Algebra 2 will have studied the equivalent of one semester of formal geometry.  Real-world problems are included along with applications to other subjects such as chemistry & physics.

Introductory Latin  (Grades 7-8)

This course introduces younger students to basic Latin vocabulary & grammar, English derivatives, and Roman history & culture.

Prerequisite:  Working knowledge of English parts of speech.

 

Latin I (Grades 8-12)  

This course covers Latin vocabulary & grammar, English derivatives, and Roman history & culture.

Text:  Latina Christiana, Book 2 (Lessons 11-25); 2nd Semester text TBA

Prerequisite:  Introductory Latin, or equivalent, highly recommended, though not required.

 

French I (Grades 9-12)

This course introduces students to basic French vocabulary & grammar.  Topics include greetings, introductions, and description of self, family, & friends, making simple purchases and ordering a meal at a café or restaurant.  The goal is for students to be able to communicate appropriately in varied social situations. 

Text:  McDougal Littell’s Discovering French 1, by Jean-Paul & Rebecca Valette.  Students will need a bound (not spiral) composition notebook or hardbound journal & index cards.  A French/English dictionary is recommended.

Spanish I (Grades 8-12)

This course covers basic Spanish vocabulary & grammar.

U.S. Government (Grades 10-12) 1st Semester

This course covers the form and function of our government, its origins and implications.

This course covers the machinations of our economic system. This is a very practical, valuable, and timely course.

Humanities

[These courses combine multiple interrelated subjects and, therefore, are awarded 3 full units of credit. These courses integrate history, literature & composition, geography, worldviews, theology / philosophy, and fine arts appreciation.]

Humanities A: The Big Picture – A Survey from Creation to Present (Grade 7/8)

Students in this course will study world history & literature from creation to yesterday. Upon completion of this study, students should have a firm grasp of the grand sweep of the chronology of history, development of cultures, permutations of geography, key individuals & events and how worldview shaped men & nations. Students will read several classic works of literature and further develop writing skills.

Humanities II: Christendom: Apostolic Age to Enlightenment (Grades 9-12)

This integrated course focuses on the unique time period that was shaped by Christian ethics, thus rightly earning the name Christendom. Our study begins with the Apostolic Age and ends with an introduction to the Enlightenment. Topics include the history, culture, literature & art forms of European cultures during the Medieval Age. This course is literature rich and includes a British

Lit. credit. Literary analysis and writing skills are key components of this course. Composition skills addressed include outlines, essays, a research paper, poetry, & creative writing.

Grammar (Grades 7-10) 1st Semester

This course covers the structure of the English language. Students will learn to recognize and understand the construction of our language by examining samples of great literature. This course includes, but is not limited to, the study of parts of speech, vocabulary, and sentence diagramming

Composition (Grades 7-10) 2nd Semester

This course covers basic composition skills, building on grammar skills. Students will practice all of the major forms of writing (descriptive, persuasive, etc.) building in length & complexity from the paragraph to the research paper. Proper MLA format will be emphasized including the correct citing of references.

Test Prep & Study Skills (Grades 10-12) One-semester course

This course covers the new SAT and ACT tips on developing good study skills. A practice test is required in the first week of class, which can be downloaded from www.collegeboard.com

Art Survey (Grades 7-12) 1st Semester

This course is a hands-on introduction to multiple modes of visual art including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, pottery, and paper arts.

This course is a hands-on opportunity which covers the basics of photography as an art

form. Students will create a portfolio of their photography.
