When it gets down to it, Ninja Scroll is a rather simple, action-oriented anime. It mixes the sword slashing action
of classic samurai films with a hearty dose of supernatural characters for one wild and bloody ride. The lead character
Jubei cuts a bloody path, though reluctantly at first, through a number of varied and wildly entertaining opponents as he
seeks the cause of a mysterious plague.
Filled with what most outsiders would consider 'classic' anime trappings, Ninja Scroll has been responsible for numerous
converts to anime. From the highly seductive female protagonist whose very touch is death, to the massive and brutal
body count, Ninja Scroll is a 'guys' anime to be sure. However, don't let these seemingly slim points dissuade you from
watching. This film has spawned not only a sequel, but also an entire television series due in large part to its popularity.
Remember, not all great works need to have deep and thoughtful characters, twisting plotlines, and surprise endings.
Sometimes it's nice to be able to sit back and just enjoy the ride. Ninja Scroll is that kind of film. Full of
action and dazzling combat displays, it is a far cry from any b-movie shoot-em-up and is definitely a must see for fans and
non-fans alike.
