Lunar Silver Star Story was first made available WAY back in the day for the much maligned Sega CD system, but was rereleased
with updated content and additional features for the Playstation system. It tells the rather simple and cliche tale
a young man that dreams of following in his hero's footsteps, only to come to realize that he was destined to be
even greater.
The simple sprite based animation of the game's normal play sequences, including the combat, is rather crude by today's
standards, but harkens back to the 'good ol days' of console RPGs. Story rules the day here as the main character and
the wild teammates he collects along the way find themselves thrown into the middle of a world altering plot that threatens
to destroy everything and everyone they hold dear.
One very neat addition is the animated sequences thrown throughout the game. The animation is striking and beautiful,
and the voice acting is amazingly well done, especially considering the source. One very nice feature is the ability
to go back through these animated sequences once the game is completed, allowing you to re-watch them at any time.
The combat system, though seemingly crude, is actually fairly robust, and can become quite complex against some of the
later bosses. Also, unlike many modern RPGs, there are no 'random encounters' since every enemy group can actually be
seen on the maps. If you want to and are able to pull it off, you can actually avoid a large amount of combat.
Combine that with boss encounters that actually scale to your character's level and you have a well thought out system that
caters to all types of players.
I fell in love with this game from the very beginning, and I don't doubt that those of you that truly love a good story
and prefer content to graphics will too. The one sore spot is that it may be a bit difficult to find a brand new copy,
and these are still fetching quite a hefty price despite the age of this game. This only goes to show how lasting this
game truly is, and I highly recommend you give it a try if you ever come across it.
