I was introduced, completely at random, to Red Dwarf back in 1999 on the Public Broadcasting Station.  After watching a couple episodes, I was hooked.

This series is set on board a mining ship aptly named Red Dwarf, and follows the completely outrageous lives of the last remaining human being alive, his deceased roommate turned hologram, a service robot, and a humanoid evolved from a common housecat.  These 4 try their best to coexist through countless encounters with mind sucking aliens, deranged killer cyborgs, and any number of other typical science fiction creations.

This series is based on two books by Grant Naylor titled 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers' and 'Better Than Life', and fans of these books are definitely going to enjoy seeing them come to life on screen.  First broadcast by the BBC, Red Dwarf is an amazingly well achieved work of special effects and comedy.  The seemingly cheesy and low-rent FX work beautifully with the comedy of the series, and there are segments that will have you rolling in laughter.

This first volume collects the complet first season of Red Dwarf along with outtakes, deleted scenes, and even a documentary.  The only sore point is that there are only 6 episodes per season, which brings the running time without the extras to just over 2 and a half hours.  However, fans of this show would do well to grab a copy of this in order to preserve one of the more imaginative and unique shows ever produced.  It's not for everyone, but fans of british comedies like Dr. Who will more than likely really enjoy this series as well.
