In 1895 a man named D.D. Palmer gave a spinal adjustment to a janitor named Harvey Lillard who had been deaf for 17 years. Within three days of the adjustment, Harvey Lillard's hearing had returned, and chiropractic was born. Since then chiropractic has developed into the largest, drugless health care profession in the world with many hi-tech developments to help increase its effectiveness.
Chiropractic philosophy is based on two principle tenets:
1) The body is a self healing organism.
2) The nervous system is the master system of the body.
The science, art, and philosophy of chiropractic is centered around the vertebral subluxation complex (VSC). VSC is a malfunction of the spinal bones(vertebrae) which causes malfunction to the associated communications between the brain and the body. Since the nerve system's brain - body connection is what runs our body, uncorrected VSC has devastating effects on human health. The mission and goal of the chiropractor is to detect and correct the VSC.
It is commonly thought that chiropractors are doctors whose purpose is to "treat" back and neck pain. It is true that patients with these types of complaints do
favorably respond to chiropractic care, but that is only the tip of the iceberg.
Technologies such as surface EMG help your doctor of chiropractic to detect
vertebral subluxations which may or may not be causing discomfort or pain. Most modern and educated health providers realize that pain is a very poor indicator of whether or not a patient is healthy. If you drop a brick on your toe, you may be in a lot of pain, yet you are not necessarily unhealthy. At the same time there are many people who are seriously ill who experience little or no discomfort at all. Your doctor of chiropractic is interested in having you express your health to its fullest
potential by being subluxation free. Make sure you and your family have your spines checked by your chiropractor on a regular basis.**
