Mirage Sport motorhome rack

My Mirage Sport rack uses a 12V electric winch ($50 at Harbor Freight) with power in and out.  The winch cable feeds through pulleys to a swinging hoist arm, sized to swing the kayaks over the padded pin.

This winch and hoist arm will lift my weight easily; more than strong enough to lift a kayak.  The "one handed" loading is a necessity when both kayakers have only one good shoulder apiece!

The Mirage Sports are a perfect match for the back of a motorhome, because of their short length.  The bow of the boats are only a few inches higher than my roof air conditioner, and my Class C is much shorter than many large Class A motorhomes.  This rack could easily mount into a trailer hitch receiver if a pair of stabilizer straps were added at each end (to prevent rocking).  I mounted mine onto the original spare tire mount, and made an under-vehicle mount for my spare tire.

The kayak must be positioned with the bottom facing back (left kayak points left, right kayak points right).  By standing between the back bumper and the kayak, I can guide the kayak up without hitting the rack.

My lift strap is looped around the handle, to the cleat (to reduce load on the cleat).  By passing it through the drive hole, the kayak will lift straight.  I use one hand for the control, and one hand to guide the boat.

When the kayak drive hole is lifted to the height of the pin, the kayak (now hanging vertical) is swung onto the pin.  The winch feed button is pushed to let the kayak relax onto the pin.  At this time I strap the bottom of the kayak, then disconnect my lift strap to use on the other kayak.

I use individual straps at the lower tie down, and a single strap across the top.  Note the added ladder; necessary to reach my rooftop carrier where I store the full cover (never have to haul it up and down the ladder!).  The kayaks are protected from the sun by covering the entire coach for extended parking.
