Portal Road threads it's way from Lone Pine through the Alabama Hills, past Movie Flats and Horseshoe Meadow Road on up to the Sierras. At the foot of the Sierra's is Olivas Ranch Road, the homestead of the Olivas Family. Portal Road then climbs up to Whitney Portals, gateway to the sky and stars beyond. Only 13 miles from town it is a beautiful drive and if you are lucky like I have been, you may even run into a California Brown bear sitting in the middle of the road. At the top is a campground used by many climbers and fishermen. Campers love the surroundings with a small pond for fishing and a rushing creek with waterfalls.
