MODIFYING A FILE TYPE

(Note: this tip should be read in conjunction with CREATING A NEW FILE TYPE in the Miscellaneous Tips category.)

As I mentioned above, ".DOC" files are among the standard file types defined by Windows, and they are normally to be handled by Microsoft Word. Now suppose you don't have this program? You can still open this type of file in the built-in word processing program Windows WordPad. So in this case you might want to modify the ".DOC" file type so it uses WordPad. To do this, you would click the "Edit..." button rather than the "New Type..." button in the Options File Type dialog box, after first highlighting the file type you wish to change (by clicking on it), namely "Microsoft Word 6.0". You will note that all the file types listed in this dialog box are in alphabetical order by the "Description of type" that was entered when they were added.

edit file type

When the Edit file type dialog box opens up, you can click on the "Open" action, then the "Edit" button. Now an "Editing action for type: Microsoft Word 6.0" dialog box will be displayed. You then modify the entry for "Application to perform action" so that it contains

"C:\Program Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe".
