ESCAPING OUT OF A MOUSE DRAG

Suppose you have just selected a bunch of files you want to move or copy or multiple deletion activity, and you've dragged the files to the appropriate destination or perhaps near it, but suddenly you realize there is some sort of problem with what you want to do. Maybe you have some incorrect files selected, or you haven't taken a necessary prior step, or something like that. Can you temporarily abort the file drag before it completes, but still leave the icons selected? Yes, you can, just by typing the Esc key before letting go of the mouse button.
