TURN QUICK LAUNCH TOOLBAR INTO FLOATING PALETTE

With the introduction of Internet Explorer version 4, and the Desktop Update, Microsoft modified the Taskbar by adding something called the Quick Launch toolbar. The toolbar, which normally sits at the immediate right of the Start button, initially contained an icon called Show Desktop which, when clicked, would immediately collapse all open windows to the Taskbar, allowing instant access to the Desktop. It also contained shortcut icons for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Users can add whatever shortcuts to their programs or folders that they wish to this toolbar. Clicking once on any of these icons would quickly launch that program or open that folder window.

Quick Launch

The left end of the Quick Launch toolbar contains a raised vertical bar that can be clicked and dragged to other positions on the Taskbar, and even off the Taskbar entirely onto an open area of the Desktop. When you do the latter, the toolbar turns into what is called a floating palette. This will give you a great deal more room on your Taskbar. You can resize this palette just as you would a window by holding your mouse cursor over an edge until the cursor turns into a double-pointing arrow, and then clicking and dragging in any direction. Then it would be best if you made sure this palette would always be visible by right-clicking the title bar and selecting Always on Top from the context menu. You can also move the palette around by clicking and dragging on the title bar.
