WINDOWS 98 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY
Probably most Windows users have at least one
program that runs on their computer whenever Windows is
started up. Some of these programs will leave an icon on
your system tray (the indented area on the righthand side
of the Taskbar.) Again, some of the programs will appear
in the Startup folder. (To see the contents of the
Startup folder, just click on the Start button, then
click on Programs, and then the Startup folder will be on
the first menu that cascades out.) However, not all these
programs run at system boot through being in Startup.
Some run because of being in the WIN.INI file, and some
run because they are in a certain part of the Registry.
How can you disable any unwanted programs that run at
system startup? If they appear in the Startup folder, it
is simple: just move the shortcuts pointing to them out
or delete them. You can also look in the WIN.INI file and
remove the file names from LOAD= or RUN= statements. But
if they are in the Registry, you had better have Windows
98, rather than Windows 95, for the former has built into
it a new utility, called the System Configuration
Utility.

To get to it, click on the Start button, then click on
Run, and finally enter MSCONFIG in the Run dialog box and
click on OK. When you get to the System Configuration
Utility screen, click on the Startup tab to see a list of
the programs that run at system startup. You can remove
the check mark next to any you do not want to run. If you
change your mind later, you can always go back to this
screen and click to enter a check mark again.
