AUTOMATIC SKIP DRIVER
Windows 98 has a new capability built in to try and
correct system crashes or hangs that occur during boot.
It will try to avoid future problems of the same sort by
automatically skipping the operation that was occuring
when the problem developed. Unfortunately, because of
this, it may disable the loading of drivers for some of
your hardware, which could cause further problems. There
is a program, called ASD (or Automatic Skip Driver),
which is used to accomplish this task.

(By the way, this program is also present in Windows ME.)
If you go to the Start button and click it, then click
Run and type ASD in the dialog box and click OK, you can
find out if Windows is skipping any operations on your
bootup. If it isn't you will simply get a message that
there are no current ASD critical operation failures on
this machine. In the other case, it will list the
operations skipped. You can put a check mark beside any
of these operations that you want Windows 98 to retry the
next time you boot. Then, the next time you boot, run ASD
again and see if that operation is still disabled. If so,
you may have found a problem in your hardware or your
BIOS.
