OPENING FOLDERS WITH "RUN"

Note: this tip should be read in conjunction with GETTING TO THE DESKTOP in the Desktop Tips category.

In the above example, "desktop" is actually the name of a folder -- that is, what used to be called a "directory" -- on your hard drive under the "WINDOWS" folder. You can always open any folder by accessing the "Run" command on the Start menu, and typing in its name in the dialog box. If your folder is a sub-folder of the WINDOWS hierarchy, you don't have to type in the full path name. For example you can get to the "SEND TO" folder, or the "START MENU" folder by just typing in those words. In those two cases, you must enclose the folder names in quotation marks, since the folder names contain a space. However, say you had a folder called "NEW" in your root directory; to open a folder view of it, type "\NEW" in the Run dialog box. To open a folder view of the root directory, type in "\". In both these cases, you don't need to type the quotation marks since there are no spaces in the folder names.
