DOING A FAST RESTART OF THE COMPUTER

After you have changed the resolution or color depth of your display, Windows wants you to reboot the computer in order to carry out the change of settings. One way to do this while saving time on the normal startup sequence is this: click on the Start button, select Shut Down from the menu, then press and hold down the Shift key while you click on the option for Restart the Computer. Keep holding down the Shift key while click OK, and only release the Shift key when the screen has the message "Windows is now restarting" displayed on it. By holding down the shift key you bypass the boot sequence, which will save 20 to 30 seconds. Instead of rebooting, Windows just exits to what is called "real mode" and then restarts.
