DON'T DROWN IN WINDOWS IN MY COMPUTER
Okay, so you've started My Computer, and you're busy
exploring your hard disk in order to perhaps prune some
of those unnecessary files from it. Now, each time you
click on a new directory (sorry, the new Windows 9x name
is "folder") in the My Computer window, up pops
a new window based on the directory/folder you clicked
on. Those windows keep multiplying like the rabbits that
deluged Australia after the beast was imported into that
country. Eventually, even "tiling" all these
windows won't show you adequately the contents of all of
them at once on your screen.
So let's suppose that all you really wanted to do when
you click on a new directory/folder is to use the same
window for showing the contents of that one rather than
what was previously displayed (as in File Manager under
Windows 3.x.) That way there aren't so many windows to
close to get out of My Computer gracefully. How do you do
it? First, you must select the "View" option on
the menu bar at the top of the My Computer window, then
select the "Options" command. (Or if you're
using Win98 or WinME, it's the "Tools" menu and
you select "Folder Options".) After you select
the "Folders" tab (or the "View" tab
in Win98 or ME, you can then activate a check box for
"Browse folders by using a single window that
changes as you open each folder." In Windows 98 and
ME, it's the "General" tab and you put a dot
next to "Open each folder in the same window."
