REAL-MODE DOS HAS GONE (WINME)
Yes, with Windows ME you can no longer boot to
Real-Mode DOS, as you could under Windows 95 and 98. But
DOS hasn't completely disappeared. There is still the
"DOS box", called MS-DOS Prompt, which can be
reached from the Start Menu. And you can still boot to
DOS on a bootable floppy disk. But in many ways that
expert users of Windows will lament, DOS is on its way
out. For example, you might still see the files
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in your root directory, but
if you try to edit them in order to make changes to the
boot sequence, the changes won't stick the next time you
boot. And another consequence of the near disappearance
of DOS is that you can no longer use the "FORMAT
/S" command to format a bootable floppy disk. The
only way to create bootable disk is through the
Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel, on the
Startup Disk tab.
