DANGEROUS PRE-95 DISK TOOLS

When your installation of Windows 95 took place, the new MS DOS version 7.0 was also installed, and some of the previous DOS command programs were renamed because they cause problems with long file names. One of these was the old ScanDisk program and another was Defrag. If you chose to keep the old version of Windows on your machine, rather than updating it with the new, the old commands will still be available. But be aware that they can wipe out the link between any regular file names (up to 8 characters, a dot, and up to 3 letters for the file extension) and the new long names now available. That is why Microsoft replaced or renamed these programs. Another dangerous disk tool is the old Norton utility Directory Sort, which also wasn't written to be able to sort long file names. You can use a shareware utility called LFNSORT (Long File Name Sort) that can be downloaded from our BBS instead. This one will work both in DOS 7.0 and previous versions.
