CHANGE THE SPACING OF ICONS ON THE DESKTOP
The icons on your computer's desktop are spaced according
to an invisible grid of squares. Each of the square cells
in the grid is by default (for small fonts) 75 x 75
pixels. The default icon size is 32 pixels with an icon
spacing of 43 pixels between icons. You can change the
spacing to make them closer together or farther apart.
Here's how: right-click an empty area on your desktop and
then click Arrange Icons from the context menu that pops
up. Next click Auto Arrange from the menu scrolling down
after the previous step. Now your icons will all line up
in columns on the left-hand side of the desktop.

Now right-click the desktop again, and choose Properties
from the context menu. Then click the Appearance tab.
Click the drop-down arrow in the field called Item to
open up a drop-down list of items you can modify. Click
Vertical Icon Spacing and then adjust the size by using
the spin controls in the Size field to the right of the
Item field. (That is, you click on the Up or Down arrows
to make the value greater or smaller, or you can click
the value and enter directly a new number.) Next you
click Horizontal Icon Spacing and adjust the value in the
same way as you did the Vertical. You can now click the
Apply button to see what the effect of your modifications
will be. If you don't like it, do more adjustments until
you do, and then click OK.
