TURNING OFF WINDOWS SCRIPTING HOST
Most of the oldtimers in my reading audience should be
familiar with the concept of "batch files".
These are files that contain commands to DOS for
controlling the actions of the computer. The Windows
equivalent of the old DOS batch file is provided by a
component called Windows Scripting Host. This may or may
not be enabled on your computer. Some people think it
should not be enabled, because certain viruses -- such as
the I Love You virus -- can act on your computer in
destructive ways through the use of scripts written for
Windows Scripting Host. If you want to make sure WSH is
disabled, here is how you do it: click on the Start
button, then select Settings from the Start Menu, click
on Control Panel, and finally double click on the applet
for Add/Remove Programs. Now click on the Windows Setup
tab, double click on Accessories in the list of installed
Windows components. Remove the check mark (if any) next
to Windows Scripting Host and click on OK to exit.
