SPEEDING UP YOUR CD-ROM DRIVE
While we're talking about CD-ROM drives, let me mention
that you may be able to speed up its operation by
adjusting a few settings in Windows 9x. Here's how: right
click on My Computer and select the Properties item in
the context menu that scrolls down. Now click on the
Performance tab. You next need to click the button called
File System, and then the CD-ROM tab. There is a slider
which adjusts the Supplemental Cache Size. Drag this
slider all the way to the right, toward Large. Next you
can click on the down arrow for Optimize access pattern
for in order to activate the drop down menu. Then,
whether or not your CD-ROM drive is rated 4x or higher,
select Quad-speed or higher. After you click on OK, and
then Close, and then re-boot the computer so the new
settings take effect, your drive will run faster because
it uses a larger cache.
