GRONK
Radio Network©®™
Welcome to our home on the web. The
GRONK
Radio Network is a remote base intertie headquartered in Southern
California. We operate many sites interconnected by full-duplex radio
pathways, some with steerable remote base radios on other bands such as
2-Meters (144MHz). We sponsor a few open repeaters serving localized
areas as well. "The
Network" or "GRONK" as we call it, is a private radio system where
membership
is by invitation and sponsorship. Please visit our membership section
for more details.
Our
affiliates partner with us in the spirit
of mutual interest and cooperation to further the Network and the
amateur radio hobby. Affiliated radio systems continue the spirit of
camaraderie and innovation by extending our coverage areas &
diversity of participants. Together with the parent GRONK
organization
& radio system, the Network can continue to be the enduring
institution it has been for decades. The GRONK Radio Network (as
the
radio system and parent organization) is owned and operated by Matt,
W6KGB under a "benevolent dictatorship" model. Ownership of affiliates
is independent, though maintainence,
construction and installation of radios is often a cooperative effort
between groups. Radio systems survive when people work together.
Beginning by the inspiration & efforts of Terry Downey (W6TD) our
founder & friends in the 1960s, GRONK is the oldest network of its
kind. It predates Cactus and other groups & pioneered wide-area
fully duplexed linking. Cactus then took these efforts to the next
level in subsequent years. GRONK was at one time large when Cactus was
young. Through a few cycles of (in)activity it never grew to the
proportions Cactus eventually evolved into. It remains as an
institution however, having survived these 40+ years. Now in a new
phase of rebirth, the goal is to carry it another four decades hence or
more.
