Re: 2432 Walnut Ave. Drug and Alcohol
Rehabilitation Center
LUPC July 13, 2004 Agenda Item #7
Letter to LUPC from George E. Turski:
We want to notify the Venice City Council of a planned
opening of a Drug and alcohol Rehab Center at 2432 Walnut ave.
The opening will be early August
, possibly later. The center will consist of both male and female drug
or alcohol abusers over eighteen years old in various stages of rehab,
including initial detox.
We have been told that they plan to
have NINE patients and one or two on site aids plus visiting
staff . The admission is voluntary. Some patients may be coming from
other centers to finish their stay here. The stay per patient may be
thirty days or longer. The patients will be largely unsupervised.
They will be in various stages of detax. Curfews are still to be set.
On weekends the patients will be allowed visitors. Parking will be a
major problem.
We are deeply troubled by this
center and would prefer it not opening. We have been told by housing
inspectors that it is the first such facility to be established in
Venice.
Mr. Michael Roy is the Executive Director of
this center.
He may be reached at cell 310-344-5134, home
310-306-0540.
We have
been informed By California Alcohol and Drug Program certification
board, that each facility opening in residential neighborhoods is
allowed six patients. This is also a Federal law. To add additional
patients they need further approval and permits from the Dept. Of
Housing, and the Dept. of Building Safety and Dept of Zoning.
1. We need
the councils help in stopping this center .
2. We need
the councils help in stopping the center from expanding beyond six
patients.
3. We need
the councils help in petitioning the City and State representatives to
amend this law and limit the location of these places away from
schools, liquor stores and houses with children.
We need to
amend CA code 11834.0 and the California Code of Regulations 10500.
Best,
George E. Turski- 310-306-1027
