Introduction:
from James D. Freeman II

The following names are transcribed from 18 ledger pages once maintained by my great, great grandfather, Francis W. Quarles.

Mr. Quarles, a life-long resident of Rome, Georgia enlisted May 14, 1861 in the Miller's Rifles - Company E, 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment. On August 20, 1862 Sergeant Quarles was wounded at Rappahannock Station, Virginia. His wounds resulted in his right arm being amputated at the shoulder, and on February 17, 1863 he received a disability discharge from the Confederate Army.

The original ledger pages appear to have been written at different times during the late 1890s (two of the pages show dates in January 1898). On the reverse of one sheet there are names listed with numerical entries (i.e., 10, 25, 35). Since these numbers do not correspond to the individual's unit designations I can only assume that these numbers reflect monetary amounts. Unfortunately, I have no way of determining the facts.

Mr. Quarles, at the time of his death, was adjutant of the Floyd County Camp Number 368 of Confederate Veterans. Based upon this fact I surmise that these ledger pages contain names of veterans that Mr. Quarles dealt with in his official capacity. Especially since the top of each ledger sheet reflects the following:

CONFEDERATE VETERANS OF FLOYD COUNTY, GEORGIA

NAME:

CO:

REGIMENT:

 BRIG

 DIV:

POST OFFICE:

Following Mr. Quarles death in 1913 these pages came into the possession of my grandfather, Mr. Herbert C. Carwile of Rome, Georgia. Mr. Carwile and Mr. Francis W. Quarles' son, John W. Quarles, were long-time business partners in Quarles & Sons, a mercantile store in North Rome.

Quarles & Sons was founded by Mr. Francis Quarles in 1870 and was originally located on the corner of Kingston Avenue and Chambers Street in what use to be Forrestville, Georgia. When the store and house burned the store was relocated to Calhoun Avenue were it remained open until the mid-1960s, when Mr. Herbert C. Carwile retired. The house was rebuilt on the original site with Mr. Quarles assisting in the construction. It remains in its remodeled form at 202 Kingston Avenue in Rome, Georgia, although it has passed out of family ownership.

Following my grandfather's death the ledger pages were passed to me.

Excluding duplications there are over 279 individuals listed on Mr. Quarles' ledger pages. However, due to the age of the pages and Mr. Quarles' handwriting some of the information is illegible; I have only been able to partially or totally decipher 276 names. To the best of my ability I have transcribed the "names, companies, regiments, brigades, divisions and post offices" as they appeared on Mr. Quarles' ledger pages.

To facilitate research I have alphabetized the names and eliminated duplicate entries. I have refrained from using abbreviations except for those initials used by Mr. Quarles when listing individual names.

Since I am unable to verify all the information through State and Federal archives I would strongly recommend that you not use this listing as a definitive authority. Instead I would suggest it be used as a starting point for further research or clarification of existing documentation.

I realize that there will be some mistakes and I ask your indulgence. I welcome any additional information that clarifies the names listed by Mr. Quarles so that all of us can have a better understanding of these turbulent times and the horrific conflict that embroiled our Nation.

Respectfully,

James D. Freeman II
April 9, 2001

Notes and Footnotes:

  1. Mr. Quarles lists no brigade or division commanders, but he lists a battalion commander – "Robison."
  2. In the margin just above Anderson’s name Mr. Quarles wrote "TLH."
  3. Mr. Quarles lists the regiment as the "8th Reg.", but I believe this is supposed to be the 8th Georgia Battalion.
  4. Handwriting and age of document makes it difficult to read, but the name of the individual appears to be "R. Bruestover."
  5. The ink is blotted on the unit’s name … it is either the "10th Texas Cavalry" or "10th Tennessee Cavalry."
  6. The name appears to be "Parson."
  7. The name appears to be "Days" but I believe Mr. Quarles means "Deas."
  8. On one sheet Mr. Quarles lists J.P. Chambers unit as the 1st Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, and on a later sheet he lists it as 1st Georgia Cavalry.
  9. On a subsequent sheet Mr. Quarles lists the division commander as "Hampton."
  10. Mr. Quarles did not list a unit of assignment nor did he use "ditto" marks like he did on other pages. However, J.L. Cook and S.D. Cook, the next entry on the ledger sheet fall in between men assigned to the 38th Georgia Infantry and the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiments. Every name on this particular sheet has a unit of assignment so I have to assume that Mr. Quarles meant to indicate that J.L. Cook and S.D. Cook were in fact assigned to either of the units that bracketed their names.
  11. See Footnote Number 10.
  12. Believe this unit is supposed to be the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment.
  13. Mr. Quarles spells the name "Corput" but I believe it is "van den Corput."
  14. Official designation was Captain Max van den Corput’s Battery, Georgia Light Artillery. This battery was formerly Company A, 3rd Battalion Georgia Volunteer Infantry but was detached in January or February 1863 to act as an independent battery of artillery. The battery was composed of men from Floyd County, Georgia.
  15. The name of the regiment appears to be "Corfurt’s Battery" but it might be "Corput’s Battery."
  16. The 1st Confederate Georgia was also known as the 1st Confederate Infantry Regiment.
  17. The name appears to be "Days" but I believe Mr. Quarles means "Deas."
  18. Believe the division commander’s name is "Hindman."
  19. Name appears as "Giss" but I believe Mr. Quarles means "Gist."
  20. Mr. Quarles lists the regiment as "1st Georgia Infantry" but I believe he means the 1st Georgia Infantry, State Line."
  21. The ledger page is torn so I am unable to determine the full name of the town … I assume it is "Rock Creek, Georgia."
  22. Mr. Quarles’ handwriting is difficult to read but the name appears to read "Cynenerus Gorrn."
  23. The post office listed by Mr. Quarles appears to be "Anna Dill, Georgia."
  24. The brigade commander’s name appears to be "Crews."
  25. Mr. Quarles wrote what appears to be "Dr." prior to C.S. Harris’ name.
  26. On one sheet Mr. Quarles spells the name "Harriss" and on another sheet he spells the name "Harris."
  27. Mr. Quarles included an additional letter after "11th Ga" but it is hard to decipher what it is; it might be that the regiment was the 11th Georgia Infantry Battalion.
  28. The name of the brigade commander appears to be "Talmers."
  29. Mr. Quarles wrote the middle initial as "B" in ink and then wrote over it with a "D" in pencil.
  30. The page is torn and the post office information is missing.
  31. This entry on Mr. Quarles’ ledger sheet has no name but it immediately follows A.J. Little’s entry on the ledger. There is no indication whether Mr. Quarles just forgot to include the name or whether it implies that A.J. Little was transferred to the 6th Arkansas Cavalry.
  32. On one sheet Mr. Quarles spells the name "Locklayer" and on another sheet he spells the name "Locklear."
  33. Mr. Quarles indicates that Corput’s Battery was assigned to Johnston’s Corps.
  34. Mr. Quarles has written "Rev" in front of the A.J. Matters name so he may be a member of the clergy.
  35. The division commander’s name appears to be "Pennington."
  36. Mr. Quarles has Thomas J. McClain listed on another page as being assigned to the 44th Georgia Infantry Regiment, but this appears to be a mistake since he is listed on the rolls of the 40th Georgia Infantry Regiment.
  37. Mr. Quarles entry appears to read, "McCray, MD, C.S.A., Act. Surgeon."
  38. Difficult to read but maybe "Humes."
  39. The page is torn and only the first letter of the post office can be seen; it is "R."
  40. Mr. Quarles has two names listed in the brigade commanders’ column for George P. Morrow. The first name appears to be "Bartaus" and the second name is "Stovall."
  41. The name for the division commander appears to be "Steward."
  42. Mr. Quarles’ handwriting is difficult to read … the last name appears to be "Nish" but it could also be "Nash."
  43. Believe this may be Maxwell’s Battalion, Regular Light Artillery.
  44. Believe this is Captain William L. Scott’s Tennessee Light Artillery Company
  45. Mr. Quarles’ handwriting appears to read "1st Conofas."
  46. On one sheet Mr. Quarles lists the regiment commander as Benning and on another sheet he lists the regiment commander as Anderson.
  47. On the ledger sheet, Mr. Quarles has the initials "M.D." behind Mr. Ramsaur’s name; I assume that he was a doctor after the war.
  48. Mr. Quarles’ handwriting is difficult to read but it appears to be "Yeises Legion."
  49. Mr. Quarles has two names listed for the division commander – the first appears to be "Bog" and the second is "Johnson."
  50. It appears from Mr. Quarles handwriting that Salmon’s initials are: "J.W.P."
  51. Name appears as "Frazier" but it may be "Frazer."
  52. Believe the "Bartow" mentioned is Colonel Francis S. Bartow who was the regimental commander when the 8th Georgia Infantry was formed in 1861. During the first Battle of Manassas, Colonel Bartow commanded the 2nd Brigade of General Joseph E. Johnston’s army.
  53. Appears to be "I" Company.
  54. Mr. Quarles lists in the brigade and division columns the following information: ‘Artillery; Army of Virginia."
  55. The 1st Confederate Infantry Regiment was also known as the 1st Georgia Confederate Regiment.
  56. Subsequent entry for A.D. Trapp reads: "2nd Arkansas dismounted" and "3rd Brigade."
  57. Mr. Quarles lists the brigade commander as "Sims" but I believe he means "Simms."
  58. Mr. Quarles writing appears to indicate the spelling of the individual’s names is "I.J. Whatley."
  59. Believe this unit is the Cherokee Light Artillery, which belonged to Captain Max van den Corput’s Battery, Georgia Light Artillery
  60. Mr. Quarles writing appears to indicate the spelling of the brigade commander’s name is "Day" or "Days." Nevertheless, I believe Mr. Quarles means "Deas." On a subsequent page Mr. Quarles lists the brigade commander as "Benning."
  61. On another page Mr. Quarles lists the division commander as "Cheatham" and another sheet he lists no division commander.
  62. On a subsequent sheet Mr. Quarles lists "Rome, Georgia" as the post office.
  63. The post office that Mr. Quarles listed appears to be "Sena, Georgia."
  64. Mr. Quarles lists the name as "Wynn" but I believe the name is "Winn."
  65. On a subsequent sheet Mr. Quarles leaves the division commander blank.
  66. On a subsequent sheet Mr. Quarles lists the post office as "Rome, Georgia."
