Cartridge Box Plate of the
Oglethorpe Light Infantry
Company B, 8th Georgia Volunteer Infantry

leaf line

Cartridge Box Plate found by John Prokopis (father of Gus Prokipis) at Harrison's Landing, Va. It was probably a Union soldier's battlefield pickup or "souvenir" and dropped there during the Union Army's retreat from the 7 Days Battles, July 1862, as the 8th Georgia did not actually fight at Harrison's Landing. Very few specimens are known to exist. It appears to have been struck by a projectile.

Cartridge Box Plate image from
"Plates and Buckles of the American Military," pg. 355:

This image shows the identical "OLI" cartridge box plate. All 3 known specimens (at time of book's publication) are cartridge box plates, but it is likely that a corresponding belt buckle existed. Size about 2 x 3 inches, weight about 2 oz., die-stamped and made of brass and solder.
