George McLeod

George Fletcher McLeod was born in 1842 in Bibb County, Ga., and was the son of John Fletcher McLeod (b. Feb. 22, 1809) and Harriet Jane Smith McLeod. Harriet Smith's father was George Augustus Smith (originally Stanhope), born in London, and reputed to be a son of Lord Chesterfield. George was the good friend, as well as, cousin-in-law of Norman Edward Statham, also in Company C.and turns up frequently in Norman's life. Like his cousin Norman, he lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1935 at age 93. Confederate Service Record Summary: McLeod, George Fletcher.------- private April 16, 1861. Wounded at 1st Manassas, Va. July 21, 1861. Discharged, disability, at Richmond, Va. August 28, 1861. Born in Bibb County, Ga. in 1842. Died in Wilcox County, Ga. in 1935. Pension Information: On September 28, 1915, in support of a pension request of his good friend George Fletcher McLeod, Norman Statham filled the following affidavit with the ordinary of Wilcox County, Georgia. Here are some of his responses, which tells us about both men's careers during the War Between the States: Q. How long have you know him? Q. When, where, and in what Company and Regiment did George McLeod Enlist? Q. How did you obtain this information of this service? Q. When and where was his Command surrendered or discharged? Q. Were you personally present with his Command at surrender? Q. If not, where were you and how came you there?
