William A. King was born in 1841, and joined the Miller Rifles, Company E, on May 14, 1861 in Rome, Ga.

According to John King, family records indicate that William lost his arm on July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, and died there July 4, 1863. In his last diary entry, he stated that he had been "mortally" wounded and that his brother Felix [color sergeant] would continue the diary. William's 3 brothers, Felix, Elzaphan, and Palemon King were in Co. K of the 8th. William is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va.

William A. King appears on a "List of those C. S. A. soldiers who, having died from wounds inflicted during the three days battle of July 1, 2, & 3 at Gettysburg, Penn., were there buried and can yet be recovered separately from the identification of their graves." King is identified on page 11, under the generic heading for all the dead: "The following 43 are buried at another place on the same farm [not identified but possibly the John Edward Plank farm], on which the above fifteen [a separate list] are buried. These are without marks and are buried in the same yard with a large number of unmarked or unknown 'Georgians'..."

William King's remains were placed in box no. 31 of 43 for shipment to Hollywood Cemetery [page XI of the detail]. His account reads: "31 - King, W. A. Corp, Co. E, 8th Ga. Regt." The remains were moved to Hollywood Cemetery in 1872.
